Ending Child Marriage

Child marriage, defined as marriage under 18 years old, where the girls have been a major victim. It has negative implication in terms of health, psychological, and economical to both of the family and society. Despite being prohibited by international law, the childhood of millions of girls has been robed. The facts, there are still over 70 millions childhood brides in worldwide, one third married the age before 18, and one in nine are married before the age of 15. Imagine, the life of the children that was supposed to study in the school, play with their friends, help their parents, suddenly forced to stop this activities and forced to bear a responsibility to protect his or her new family at sudden time without preparation, moreover the education of the baby will become a problem itself to the future generation, since the model figure actually needs one too. And as we know “children is the future hope”. Not only that, the girl more likely become a victim of domestic violence and had to suffer health complications because of the early sexual activity and childbearing. In case of early marriage, the risks of early pregnancy and childbirth are well documented: increased risk of dying, increased risk of premature labour, complications during delivery, low birth-weight, and a higher chance that the newborn will not survive (UNICEF). So why are this case still happening? Tradition, culture, religion, and lack of options. According to many research, child marriage often occure in poor nation / poor rural communities. In there, girls are usually thought to be an economic burden and their marriage to an old man is believed to benefit them both financially and socially. From my point of view aside from many its disadvantages, I can’t see any advantage at all. So, why is there need to let this case go on? In fact, we have to end it to protect the future of the children of the world. By improving the education acces to quality schooling, encouraging them to take the oppurtinities to gain skills and education, because education is the most powerful tool to end it.
